Plato and von Hildebrand on the Essence of Love DP - 2016 Sep 30 TA - Aither PG - 54--65 VI - 8 IP - 2 AID - 10.5507/aither.2016.009 IS - 18037879 AB - The aim of this paper is to compare Plato's and Dietrich von Hildebrand's philosophical account of the essence of love. The author proceeds by gradually working out the similarities and differences between the two accounts of love and by attempting to explain the differences between them, partly by identifying the different metaphysical assumptions of both authors. The main philosophical interest of this paper lies in showing how, in these two philosophical accounts of love, elements of desire of the object of love and elements of responsiveness to its value are contained, although, in each of the accounts, in different way and with different final outcome.
