This paper analyzes the problem of the theoretical and interpretative challenges which the New World encounters brought to the European intellectuals. The main attention is paid to "modern" natural histories of Francisco de Hernández and José de Acosta and their efforts to deal with the ancient tradition. Through specific examples, the text aims to illustrate how the discovery of the New World changed the ways of exploring nature; concretely focuses on following topics: critical approach to the classical tradition (especially to Aristotle and Pliny), empiricism in the constitution of scientific knowledge, legitimation of natural historical enquiry and anthropocentrism in early modern scientific culture.
